One song. Four decades of Los Angeles lineage.

Song Zero is a playlist format built around a single track — the Song Zero — and organized as a musical genealogy. Everything before it is a root. Everything after it is a branch. The goal is not a 'best of' list but a map: a way of hearing how music actually moves across time, geography, and culture.

Vol. 2 starts with Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication (1999). The band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 as a funk-punk experiment — Anthony Kiedis rapping over Flea's slap bass, more Defunkt than Aerosmith. By 1999, John Frusciante had returned from a near-fatal heroin addiction, Rick Rubin was at the boards in Cello Studios, and the band that once played naked with socks on their genitals was reaching for something gentler. Kiedis later wrote that they tried ten arrangements before someone played an ultra-sparse riff that became the song. The lyrics map Hollywood's rot underneath the gloss. It peaked at #69 on the Hot 100 and #1 on Modern Rock — the moment a feral LA band turned into a melodic pop-rock institution.

The playlist traces three root lineages converging on a single LA band: a BLUE branch of funk and soul running from Sly Stone through Parliament and Curtis Mayfield to Rick James — the rhythmic DNA Flea grew up worshipping; a RED branch of punk and hardcore running through Black Flag, Minutemen, Minor Threat and Fugazi — the SST and Dischord scenes the Chili Peppers came up alongside in early-80s LA; and a thinner GREEN strand of classic rock psychedelia that surfaces in Frusciante's guitar tone. Post-1999, the branches scatter: nu-metal and funk-metal heirs (Incubus, Fishbone, Korn, Limp Bizkit), alt-rock radio descendants, and the melodic pop-rock template that defined 2000s mainstream guitar music.

When Kiedis, Flea, Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons started playing LA clubs in 1983, they were doing something almost no one else was: bringing the slap-bass vocabulary of Bootsy Collins and Larry Graham into rooms where Black Flag and the Minutemen had set the volume. The first records flopped commercially but they fused two scenes — the funk records Flea borrowed from his stepfather and the hardcore shows the band actually attended.

Rick Rubin produced the band in a haunted Hollywood mansion and 'Under the Bridge' put a funk-punk LA outfit on MTV in heavy rotation. It was the moment the underground crossover became a commercial fact — and the moment Frusciante quit the band, unable to handle the scale.

Frusciante back from addiction, Flea pulling his bass into the background for the first time, Kiedis singing instead of rapping, Chad Smith holding a pocket that owes as much to Al Jackson as to D.H. Peligro. The funk, the punk, the LA scene memory and the classic-rock melodicism all collapse into one ultra-sparse riff. It is the sound of a band finally writing a ballad without forgetting where they came from.

Within four years, the template was everywhere: Incubus going melodic, Hoobastank chasing the clean chorus, even Korn softening their edges. The Chili Peppers had shown that funk-rooted alternative bands could write pop ballads without losing their license, and the entire 2000s rock radio format reorganized around that permission.

The bridge between Red Hot Chili Peppers' rock-funk crossover and Parliament's full-throttle groove runs straight through this 1969 single. "Everyday People" handed Parliament — and George Clinton specifically — a blueprint for building a message inside a party track, the same move Parliament would perfect six years later on "Give Up The Funk." What made Sly & The Family Stone so disruptive wasn't just the music. Formed in San Francisco in 1966, they were the first major American rock group with a racially integrated, mixed-gender lineup — a living argument for the song's message. Larry Graham's bass and Cynthia Robinson's trumpet weren't background texture; they were equal voices, which is exactly the kind of democratic arrangement funk would carry forward for decades.
