THE CONCEPT

One album title. Four decades of ska, punk, and the New Jersey kids who fused them.

Song Zero is a playlist format built around a single track — the Song Zero — and organized as a musical genealogy. Everything before it is a root. Everything after it is a branch. The goal is not a 'best of' list but a map: a way of hearing how music actually moves across time, geography, and culture.

Vol. 2 starts with Catch 22's 'Keasbey Nights' (1998). The band formed in East Brunswick, New Jersey in 1996 — guitarist and vocalist Tomas Kalnoky recruiting a full horn section including trombonist James Egan, who had also been trumpeter Kevin Gunther's first music teacher. That detail matters: this was not a punk band bolting on brass for novelty. It was a group with genuine musical training playing with genuine fury. Kalnoky wrote the album alone, and it became one of the defining documents of third wave ska. He would later re-record it almost note-for-note with Streetlight Manifesto in 2006, which tells you something about how seriously he took the material.

The playlist traces two primary lineages feeding into 1998: a BLUE branch running from Jamaican ska through Two-Tone into the American third wave, and a RED branch running from proto-punk — The Stooges, MC5, The Velvet Underground — through the Ramones and the British punk explosion. By March 1998, the two currents this playlist traces had been building toward each other for years. The third wave had taken Jamaican ska's offbeat and Two-Tone's urgency and replanted them on American college campuses; punk's raw velocity had never really gone away, just mutated through hardcore and into the mainstream. 'Keasbey Nights' is where they collide cleanly — horn lines with genuine jazz training driving over chord progressions that owe as much to the Ramones as to Prince Buster. Tomas Kalnoky wrote the whole album himself, which meant the synthesis happened in a single head rather than between two genres negotiating over rehearsal room disagreements.

"T.V. Eye" is the raw, pummeling link between the punk lineage's past and the Ramones' stripped-down fury that follows. Released on *Fun House* in 1970, the track features Iggy Pop howling over Ron Asheton's abrasive guitar and Steve MacKay's free-jazz saxophone — a combination that sounded like nothing else on American radio at the time. Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York City, the song sits on the closing stretch of the band's last album with Reed, and it quietly circles back to the music's own origin story: the moment Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" hit a kid's ears and changed everything. That backward glance made it a forward-pointing arrow. The Velvet Underground's proto-punk DNA runs straight into the 1970s scene, which is exactly where this lineage heads next with Hawkwind. Mott the Hoople recorded their entire debut album in a week, with producer Guy Stevens — the man who discovered and signed them to Island Records — pushing that raw, barely-contained energy onto tape.
