THE CONCEPT

One song. Four decades of heavy music rerouted.

Song Zero is a playlist format built around a single track — the Song Zero — and organized as a musical genealogy. Everything before it is a root. Everything after it is a branch. The goal is not a 'best of' list but a map: a way of hearing how music actually moves across time, geography, and culture.

This volume centers on Tool's "Prison Sex" (1993), recorded at Grand Master Studios in Hollywood and released on Zoo Entertainment as the second single from Undertow. Tool had formed in Los Angeles in 1990 around Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and original bassist Paul D'Amour. Produced by the band with Sylvia Massy and mixed by Ron St. Germain, the track addresses the cyclical psychology of abuse, alternating between abuser and victim — a confrontation Jones doubled down on in the stop-motion video he directed himself. It arrived during grunge's commercial peak and refused the script: slower, uglier, more architectural, more deliberate.

The roots run through four channels that all converge in 1993: progressive metal (Queensrÿche's "Eyes Of A Stranger," Dream Theater's "Metropolis"), alternative metal and noise rock (Helmet's "Unsung," Rage Against The Machine's "Bombtrack"), post-punk and post-hardcore (Fugazi's "Waiting Room"), and 1970s art rock (Pink Floyd's "Dogs"). After Undertow, those streams fan back out into four post-1993 branches. Polyrhythmic prog runs from Meshuggah through Animals As Leaders to Plini. Nu-metal absorbs Tool's groove-and-aggression template through Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Cinematic art metal grows out of Adam Jones's tension-and-release vocabulary, while post-industrial dark rock — Audioslave, Staind, Three Days Grace — carries the confrontational density forward into the 2000s mainstream.

Nothing in 1993 sounded quite like it because nothing else was holding all four traditions in the same room.

By the time Ænima arrived in 1996, the nu-metal explosion and the post-industrial dark-rock wave were both already drawing on Undertow. Tool's second album confirmed them as a shared ancestor, the band whose template both Linkin Park and Audioslave could credibly trace back to.

CONVERGENCE · 2001

Lateralus pushed Tool's polyrhythmic and cinematic instincts to their logical extremes, and the next decade split the inheritance in two. Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders, and Plini chased the rhythmic math into djent; Porcupine Tree, Opeth, and A Perfect Circle chased the atmosphere into art metal.

Originally titled "You've Gotta Be Crazy," this 17-plus-minute Roger Waters broadside sits in the lineage as the heaviest philosophical weight between Fugazi's post-hardcore urgency and Meshuggah's mechanical precision. Where Fugazi used space and restraint to make a point, "Dogs" uses sheer duration — Waters letting contempt for capitalist conformity stretch until it becomes suffocating, which is exactly the feeling he was after. Richard Wright layers Hammond organ, Farfisa, Rhodes, and a Minimoog across the track's runtime, building the kind of dense, slow-burning pressure that later progressive and art rock acts would treat as a blueprint. The vocoder-processed dog barks near the end aren't just a flourish — they're the conclusion of Waters' argument, reducing his corporate climbers to animals. That commitment to concept over comfort is what connects this branch of the lineage forward.

"Eyes of a Stranger" closes *Operation: Mindcrime* — the 1988 concept album that handed Dream Theater a direct blueprint for "Metropolis Part I" four years later. Where Dream Theater pushed the technical complexity further, Queensrÿche proved first that metal audiences would follow a full narrative arc across an entire record. The Bellevue, Washington band — formed in 1981 as The Mob before changing their name from a demo track called "Queen of the Reich" — built this closer around Geoff Tate's theatrical vocal delivery and the interlocking guitar work of Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton. Producer Peter Collins helped sharpen the cinematic quality that made the song a live centerpiece; a November 29, 1990 performance at Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam was captured for the bootleg *Operation Live Crime* the following year.

"Waiting Room" sits upstream from Helmet's blunt-force "Unsung" and downstream from Pink Floyd's sprawling "Dogs" — a bridge between rock's art-minded past and its aggressive future. Recorded in June 1988 with engineer Don Zientara, it opened Fugazi's self-titled debut EP on Ian MacKaye's own Dischord Records, proving a hardcore band could lock into a funk-driven bassline without losing any of its edge. The Washington, D.C. four-piece drew comparisons to Gang of Four's angular guitar work, and you can hear exactly why here — Joe Lally's bass carries the song the way a rhythm guitarist would, while MacKaye's riffs stab around it. Fugazi never charged more than five dollars at the door for their shows. That same refusal to compromise is baked into every bar of this track.

Where Queensrÿche's "Eyes of a Stranger" closed out 1988 with a cinematic, concept-driven heaviness, Dream Theater picked up that thread and pulled it into full technical overdrive. Formed in Boston in 1985, the band released "Metropolis Pt. 1" on their 1992 album *Images and Words*, and it immediately raised the bar for what progressive metal could attempt — shifting time signatures, extended instrumental passages, and a scale of ambition that made most hard rock feel small. The track also sits directly across from Helmet's "Unsung" in this lineage, which shows just how wide 1992's heavy music tent had stretched. While Helmet stripped everything down to blunt, rhythmic force, Dream Theater was building outward. Guitarist John Petrucci wrote the lyrics, and the song later spawned an entire concept album sequel in 1999 — proof that this six-minute track had a lot more story left to tell.

"Unsung," released April 2, 1992, lives on *Meantime* — the album that landed Helmet a deal with Interscope and cracked the Billboard 200 at number 68, a real commercial foothold for a band built on drop D tuning and post-hardcore economics. Page Hamilton's riff here is almost anti-melodic by design, locking into drummer John Stanier's machine-tight groove until the two feel like the same instrument. That tension — noise rock discipline meeting metal weight — is exactly what points forward to Fugazi's "Waiting Room," where the space between notes matters as much as the notes themselves. "Bombtrack" sits right at the root of a lineage that runs through Limp Bizkit's rap-metal arena and out the other side into Audioslave's harder rock. Recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, this 1992 opener fused heavy guitar riffs, Zack de la Rocha's rapid-fire delivery, and explicitly political lyrics in a way the genre hadn't quite heard before. Tom Morello's whammy-bar tricks and Brad Wilk's locked-in drumming gave Limp Bizkit and the entire nu-metal wave a blueprint to chase — even if they ditched the politics. When de la Rocha later left and Morello formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell, "Bombtrack" remained the DNA underneath. The band had sold over 16 million records worldwide by 2010, proof that the template this track established had serious reach.

Both tracks pair heavy riffs with uncomfortable narrative subject matter, trusting the listener to sit with the discomfort. Producer Terry Date captured the Jacksonville band's scrappy mix of DJ Lethal's turntable cuts, Wes Borland's distorted riffs, and Fred Durst's mouthy delivery in a formula that helped Limp Bizkit eventually move 40 million records worldwide. Composer Fredrik Thordendal and drummer Tomas Haake locked together riffs that sit in one time signature while the groove implies another entirely. That decoupling of melody from pulse is exactly what Animals As Leaders would carry forward on "CAFO" in 2009. Rolling Stone later called Meshuggah one of the ten most important hard rock and metal bands ever — and tracks like this one show why that claim holds up.

Formed in 2001, Audioslave blended 1970s hard rock with 1990s alternative rock, and producer Rick Rubin held that balance tight. Written just a week before the band entered NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, "Numb" became the closing track on *Meteora* (March 25, 2003) and then dominated radio, sitting at number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for 12 weeks. It has since crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify. Mike Shinoda called it representative of the *Meteora* sound — and he wasn't wrong. Where Meshuggah's "Rational Gaze" locked djent's rhythmic logic into place, "CAFO" cracked it wide open. Tosin Abasi recorded the debut album in early 2008 after his previous band Reflux disbanded, with Periphery's Misha Mansoor producing, mixing, and programming the drums entirely. That collaboration meant djent's two most connected figures were essentially in the same room building something new. Released April 28, 2009, on Prosthetic Records, "CAFO" stripped away vocals and showed that polyrhythmic metal could breathe on its own terms. No singer needed when the guitar work carries that much information. That confidence in purely instrumental storytelling is exactly what Plini picks up on with "Electric Sunrise" — melodic, patient, technically exact. "CAFO" is the bridge that made that kind of softness feel earned in heavy music.

Where Animals As Leaders' "CAFO" (2009) proved that djent could be a vehicle for genuine compositional depth, "Electric Sunrise" picks up that thread and pulls it somewhere warmer and more melodic. Released August 26, 2016, as the opening track of *Handmade Cities*, it announced Sydney-born Plini Roessler-Holgate as the genre's most accessible melodic voice — Steve Vai had already called him "the future of exceptional guitar playing," and MusicRadar backed that up by naming him best prog guitarist of 2017. The track was a collaborative effort, co-written with bassist Simon Grove and drummer Troy Wright, and self-produced by Plini. That independence kept the sound clean and deliberate rather than overworked. It sits just before Linkin Park's "Numb" in this lineage, a reminder that emotional directness and heavy guitar have always found a way to meet.
