Why Song Zero exists
Song Zero was created by Beerspitnight, a curious audiophile who wanted an easy way to dig into the rich history behind every song — the influences a track was built on, and the music it went on to influence in turn.
Every genealogy does two things. It lets you learn more about the band and the song: where it came from, who shaped it, and the scenes and continents its sound passed through. And it works like a modern album's liner notes — a way to discover other bands and songs flying in a similar orbit, so one track you love becomes a map to a dozen more.
How a genealogy is made — and fact-checked
Each Song Zero starts as an anchor track and moves through a nine-stage research pipeline: canonical anchor research, branch mapping, track selection, per-track source dossiers, editorial writing, playlist assembly, and an interactive family tree. Sources — audio archives, scholarship, oral histories, and label discographies — are cited at the foot of every page.
Accuracy is not left to chance. Independent large-language-model reviewers run a rigorous fact-checking protocol against each claim to ensure the history we present is accurate and citable, not folklore.
Every published page is reviewed by a human
The pipeline drafts; a person decides. Every genealogy published to the Song Zero archive is personally vetted and approved by Beerspitnight before it goes public.Community-generated pages that haven't cleared that review are clearly marked as unreviewed previews and kept out of the archive. Nothing reaches the public archive without a named editor standing behind it.
